Time for an Update. Meet Upd.
The new, free home for version control. Built for true builders to share projects, push code, and define the future of open source.
The engine is based on Forgejo, beautiful diffs are from Pierre, and our mission is simple: to provide a sanctuary away from GitHub and other platforms owned by big tech.

My journey began in 2010. Back then, version control felt like a discovery. My first "love" was Mercurial: it felt smarter and cleaner in CLI than Git, and was hosted natively on the old BitBucket. But the landscape changed. Atlassian bought BitBucket, and the platform declined. Git won the mindshare, and we all migrated to GitHub.
For years, GitHub was a fantastic social network for geeks, a place for genuine inspiration and peer connection. Then came the noise.
When our code was purchased in bulk for $7.5 billion, the atmosphere shifted. Today, GitHub stil is prevalent, but feels less like a home for code and more like a honeypot for malware and AI-generated slop.
Old-school engineers like myself are drowning. With 36 million new accounts added annually, the platform has shifted from a code repository to a content farm. It is no longer a community we recognize, nor one we can navigate.

It is time for a smaller, quieter place. I wanted to build a space where creating a repository actually means something.
I wanted to escape the vanity metrics of chasing stars and forks, and return to an organic network where we can find new friends and genuine inspiration.
So, I built Upd. Welcome to the new journey! (˘︶˘)
By building Upd independently, I’ve stripped away the bloat to focus on pure service quality and developer experience:
Visual Clarity: We utilize one of the best diff rendering engines available and boost the UI clarity using TX-02 Berkeley Mono™ , arguably one of the best programming fonts ever made.
Beyond Git: Upd isn't just for code archives. It natively serves packages for Go, Rust, Arch, and many other ecosystems directly from your repos.
Resilient Infrastructure: The platform is geo-distributed across US & EU regions, featuring continuous monitoring, database clusters, multi-layered caching, and robust cloud backups.
Radical Transparency: We don't just host open source; we are open source. Upd self-hosts its own code. You can see exactly how it works right here ⭢ /upd/upd-forgejo
{ UPD.DEV } is a host to many distinct communities, each with its own values and rules.
Therefore, there is no "global Code of Conduct" or "global stance on AI usage."
